Emily Parker is thrilled and excited to once again be the pedal partner for TeamMakingCancerHistory for the RaceAcrossAmerica (“RAAM”), to encourage this year’s 8 person team as they race across the North American continent on bicycles. Emily is a joyful, 12 year old 6th grader in Sugar Land, Texas with a great smile who enjoys bicycling as well as singing on stage. She is also a patient at MD Anderson’s NF Clinic in Houston, because she has Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (“NF1”).
Emily was diagnosed with the disease as a 9 month old baby after she spontaneously suffered a non-healing broken tibia, a complication of NF1. Although Emily courageously endured many painful surgeries, her tibia did not ultimately heal, and earlier this year she amputated her leg. Soon, she will be obtaining a prosthetic leg, and will be learning to walk and run on 2 strong legs for the first time in her life. She is extremely positive about this and looking forward to the day when she can join TeamMakingCancerHistory in RAAM! Many people have prayed for a miracle in Emily’s life, and have come to realize that Emily herself is the miracle, in her attitude and way of coping with her disease.
Emily would like to encourage the team in their fantastic and incredible quest! She is touched by their generosity with their time and talent as well as the blood, sweat and tears that it takes to pull off such a monumental feat as racing across the country on bike. For their sacrifice, Emily and her family are eternally grateful, and offer their full support, love and encouragement. They will be keeping the team in their prayers as they Race Across America!
